The National Canadian Lawyers’ Initiative (“NCLI”, “natcanlaw.com”, “we” or “our”) values the privacy of its users (“you”). We are committed to protecting the Personal Information (as defined below) of the users who visit www.natcanlaw.com (“NCLI Website”) and use the services available thereon.

Scope of this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) applies to information collected by the NCLI through the NCLI services, which include the NCLI Website, NCLI accounts on third-party social media sites, NCLI email and newsletters (collectively termed as “services”). This Policy describes how NCLI collects, uses and discloses your personal information in connection with our services.

Part I: Information you provide on the NCLI platform:

1. Client Form:
When you submit a client form to the NCLI, we ask for information including your first and last name, email address, city or town of residency and phone number. We also request information on the nature of your claim and the area of law and information that may be required in connection with providing you our service (“Personal Information”).

2. Students-at-Law:
When you enroll as a student-at-law to the NCLI, we ask for information including your first and last name, email address, phone number, status of legal training, province of current residence, city or town of residence, law school and fields of practical experience.

3. Mentors
When you enroll as a mentor to the NCLI, we ask for information including your first and last name, email address, phone number, status of legal practice, main province of practice, city and town of residence, current employer and fields of expertise.

Part II: Information we collect through the NCLI platform:

1. NCLI usage:

NCLI collects, uses and discloses your personal information to provide clients with professional legal services and to provide students-at-law with legal mentorship. More specifically, we collect, use and disclose your personal information for the following purposes:

  • To establish and manage relationships between client, legal mentor and student- at-law.
  • To provide you with legal advice, perform legal services and to avoid conflicts of interest.
  • To distribute newsletter and other material to individuals on our mailing list.
  • As permitted by, and to comply with, any legal or regulatory requirements or provisions.
  • For any other purpose to which you consent.
  • To verify your identity, address and carry out know-your-client checks.
  • To maintain our internal NCLI records.

2. Social media:

If you sign up to NCLI social media services, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, we will have access to some of your third-party account information from that service. This includes your name and other information in that account, as authorized in the settings on that service.

Part II: Data storage, Transfers and Security

1. Security:
Your information is stored on secured locations and on servers controlled by the NCLI.

2. Retention:
Personal information collected by the NCLI may be retained for as long as needed to fulfil not-for-profit purposes, as specified by our mandate and the provisions in ‘Information Usage’ under Part II. Some Personal Information will be retained after your relationship with us ends, however, as a general principle, we do not retain your Personal information for longer than we need it.

Part III: Right to access personal information and Queries

1. The NCLI respects your right to control your personal information. You may request the removal of your personal information from the NCLI services by contacting us at info@natcanlaw.com. Personal information will be removed within a reasonable time following the fulfillment of our non-for-profit purposes and services to you, save and except for information that the NCLI is under a legal obligation to retain.

Part IV: Modifications to Privacy Policy

1. NCLI reserves the right to modify, vary, amend or supplement this Policy at any time. If we make any changes to the Policy, we will post such changes on our website.
